Christine Smith Address: I first started making pots while still at school. I then spent a year helping to set up a pottery in a small village in N W Sicily and went on to do a BA in ceramics at Bath Academy of Art. I moved to Galloway in 1978 and set up the pottery at Barnbarroch near Kippford along with my husband Rodger. I have exhibited throughout the country and have undertaken numerous commissions but the work is sold mainly through our own showroom. I work with red earthenware clay using coloured slips and glazes. My primary interest is in decoration and form which I aim to blend together to make work which is both functional and enjoyable to use. I endeavour to combine my enjoyment of drawing, and my love of the illustrative line and humour, often present in mediaeval manuscripts, with the spontaneous medium of fluid slip and clay. My designs are largely based on the natural world, some figurative, but predominately birds and animals, using brightly coloured slips which are poured, brushed, trailed, sponged and scratched. I also use the wheel to make animal forms which are thrown and assembled and finished in matt glazes. |
