STATEMENT OF PRACTICE

Since graduating in 1999 from the University of Dundee I have exhibited through out Scotland, Italy and France. In the same year I won The Royal Scottish Academy prize for painting and the Maclaine Watters medal. Shortly afterwards I was lucky enough to win the John Kinross Scholarship, thus allowing me to travel and study in Florence, Italy.

SPACE actual physical space, the space we live, move and feel around us everyday is the subject from which I draw on to create my ‘space-scape’ paintings.

The shapes, forms and marks made come from everyday life, a trip to the super-market or a simple walk can inspire me. Just as my choice of colour is becoming more personal so to is my choice of marks. Chance happenings are as important as calculated drawing, just as organic forms mix with urban geometric forms. These conflicting areas are balanced by areas of quiet and create a kind of disorganised organisation.

My influences include The Scottish colourists, Miro and Albert Irvin, who’s use of space is truly inspirational.

It has also been quoted that I have a certain “quirky” style, which is fun!
